1969 Song of the Day- “Whispering Pines”- The Band. In listening to The Band’s second album the self-titled The Band yesterday I was thinking I would have a hard time ranking the songs on the album because they are all great but Whispering Pines has always been a favorite. The song was written by Richard Manuel- who wrote the melody and the vocal line- and Robbie Robertson who wrote the lyrics. Whispering Pines is a song about loneliness, it is both a beautiful and incredibly sad song.  Author George Case has written that Whispering Pines is one of the most haunting ballads in rock and roll. Critic Nick DeRiso wrote-” it may be the most unbearably sad thing the band ever did.” Author Barney Hoskyns called it ‘one of the saddest and loveliest passages of music in the history of rock.”

  1. They couldn’t lose with their first two albums…

Off Topic… did you see where Manny signed with the Padres for 10 years? I really didn’t think anyone would go that long.

    • 10 years is a long time… if we judge from recent Padre history they will be looking to trade him around the all-star break when they are 20 out and go through their annual house cleaning..
