1969 Song of the Day- “Whispering Pines”- The Band. In listening to The Band’s second album the self-titled The Band yesterday I was thinking I would have a hard time ranking the songs on the album because they are all great but Whispering Pines has always been a favorite. The song was written by Richard Manuel- who wrote the melody and the vocal line- and Robbie Robertson who wrote the lyrics. Whispering Pines is a song about loneliness, it is both a beautiful and incredibly sad song. Author George Case has written that Whispering Pines is one of the most haunting ballads in rock and roll. Critic Nick DeRiso wrote-” it may be the most unbearably sad thing the band ever did.” Author Barney Hoskyns called it ‘one of the saddest and loveliest passages of music in the history of rock.”
yes, quite the tear jerker. Haunting is a good word for it. Did they write The Long Black Veil? To me that is another haunting one…
Long Black Veil was a 1959 country song written by Danny DIll and Marijohn Wilkin- first covered by Lefty Frizzell… doesn’t it sound like some old traditional song from ages ago?
yes it does. and it is a song that will never go out of fashion, human nature being what it is…
They couldn’t lose with their first two albums…
Off Topic… did you see where Manny signed with the Padres for 10 years? I really didn’t think anyone would go that long.
10 years is a long time… if we judge from recent Padre history they will be looking to trade him around the all-star break when they are 20 out and go through their annual house cleaning..
Yes I give them 3-4 years… They have a great…if not the best farm system…but you never know with prospects.
You are right they have the #1 rated farm system. Maybe they will build something for once in SD.
Anything from this album will get a huge thumbs up from me. Timeless and brilliant. Music making at its best
amen
Is it just me or does this seem to have a beach boysesque sound to it?
