The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Ruby Tuesday. Ruby Tuesday- written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards was part of the double A single released in January 1967- with Let’s Spend The Night Together. Marianne Faithfull has said that Brian Jones had a part in the writing of this song- that he had played a folk ballad that caught Keith’s attention- and Keith went over the the piano and started going to work- Brian had given him the rift. For a long time the song had no lyrics- it was considered Keith and Brian’s song. Later Keith wrote the lyrics which were influenced by his losing Linda Keith his girlfriend at the time to a poet. It hurt Keith and it shows in the lyrics. Linda Keith a model- got around- she would later be the girlfriend of Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones also.
Ruby Tuesday one of The Rolling Stones best ballads- was the bigger hit in the US-over the controversial Let’s Spend The Night Together- going to #1. It was The Rolling Stones 4th #1 in the US. I like both songs but would go with Ruby Tuesday over Let’s Spend The Night Together-without question.
Ruby Tuesday was covered by Melanie- and became a Top 10 hit in the UK for her in 1970. Rod Stewart, Julian Lennon, Nazarath and Marianne Faithfull have also recorded versions of it.
One of my favorites of the Stones. I wish they would have stayed in this era a little longer. This song is brilliant.
Love this one.
I have always thought that “Ruby Tuesday” was the Stones’ “Eleanor Rigby.”
Interesting thought… it is probably as close as they would get to that!
