HANS WORST HITS OF THE 70’S–‘ARIEL’- DEAN FRIEDMAN

Ariel - Dean Friedman.jpg

Hans Worst Hits of the 70’s- “Ariel” by Dean Friedman. It’s hard to hate much on a song that you haven’t heard [until today] for a long long time but I saw the name Ariel yesterday and it was like- Yes that garbage song about having the munchies and  making spaghetti.  Ariel was only a meddling hit- #26 in 1976. It is a quirky song- quirky can be good but I always found this to be quirky bad. It did standout I will give it that- if you were listening to the radio in 1976-77 and heard this song once you surely remembered it- even though I hadn’t thought of it in years. Dork music.  Ariel was the only hit of Dean Friedman’s career. I think this is a song you either love or hate- no in between. In listening to it this morning I think I dislike it more than I thought I did. Worst part the singing of her name “Ariel” AIRRRRR EEEEE LLLLL” cringe.

  1. Woo… that part is bad…really bad. I don’t recall this one and I’m thankful. I just had to look up “Paramus Park”… at least I learned something.

    • Very cool isn’t it. I love the way it is set up. Speaking of Uncle Neil, I picked up Decade from the library today 🙂 But! It is supposed to be 2 discs from a 3 record set and there is only 1 disc 😦 Listened to the first 2 songs on the way home and I’m already in love ❤

    • There should be two discs- in vinyl form back in the day it was 3 records- on CD- it should be 2 and over 2 hours of music. Which disc do you have? Should be a total of 35 songs. It is the album that turned me on to Neil. .. Yes a lot of stuff on that website!

    • only the first disc. i heard soul man and a couple others. unreal they only included one. did you see the blog-like newsletter in there? that’s where i asked the question about the 126 verses. they said it might be published in the newsletter. we’ll see…

    • Wow that would be awesome- no I will look for the newsletter- so much stuff there I was kind of overwhelmed. Maybe the other disc has been lost? You would be surprised at how many people turn in empty cases- with the dvd still in the dvd player at home. maybe someone forgot to put it back?.. That would be great to see the 126 verses- impressive they answered so quickly. Thanks for the update!.. listening to Neil’s Harvest album at the moment!

    • Hans, the case looked like it only holds 1 disc and the label says part 1 of 2 parts, so I don’t think it is missing. I will have to see if there is part 2 to borrow. At NYA they didn’t answer, but the question box where I submitted said the Q & A might be put in the newsletter.

    • You know sometimes I order stuff through the library system that comes like that too like i have had documentaries that are 4 parts and just one disc comes- that could be the case.

  2. Another song – Lucky Stars – got to no 3 here the next year.
Another blog I follow (Alyson at ahttps://jukeboxtimemachine.com/) has it as one of her favourites.
Friedman duetted with ‘a mystery woman’ in that she was not credited. Alyson made sure she credited Denise Marsa, the actual vocalist, when she wrote about the song. Lo and behold Ms Marsa herself contacted Alyson to thank her. Sweet. Oh, Hans, you’ll hate it. Or love it as it is quite self depreciating which is why, maybe, the UK liked it. – Chris
The url Alyson used is https://youtu.be/iKhXthAzzxo which has video of them singing it 1978 and probably 201andsomething

  3. I loved this quirky song. It was pure fun. Actually, I remember Dean Friedman having another minor hit — a love song called ‘Lydia’. It might have been a bigger hit in the UK, because I occasionally hear it today on UK radio.
