Hans Worst Hits of the 70s- Watching Scotty Grow”- Bobby Goldsboro. There are a number of fine songs out there about fathers and sons- a few that come to mind- Father and Son- Cat Stevens/ Old Man- Neil Young/ Independence Day- Bruce Springsteen/ Beautiful Boy- John Lennon/Β Leader Of The Band- Dan Fogelberg/ Cats In The Cradle- Harry Chapin and of course Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone- The Temptations. Watching Scotty Grow would not make that list. The song was written by Mac Davis- the only thing Mac Davis ever did that I liked was his writing In The Ghetto- which was covered by The King. {Mac Davis is from Lubbock, Texas- Buddy Holly’s home town- Buddy was six years older-} Putting a Mac Davis song in the hands of Bobby Goldsboro- certainly nothing very good will come of that. In picking a Goldsboro song for Worst Hits- a better choice may be Honey or Little Green Apples- but I happened to hear Watching Scotty Grow the other day and I hadn’t heard it in years- I forgot how terrible a record it was. The record company advised Goldsboro not to record it- [they didn’t think anyone would buy a single about a father and son-} The single was a success -it peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100- and went to #1 on the easy listening chart.
The Dead Milkmen- on their fine Bucky Fellini album from 1987 did Watching Scotty Die- a much better tune.
Favourite father/son track – Ben Folds ‘Still Fighting It’

This song wouldn’t make any list. My favorite is Beautiful Boy.
