A tornado passed through the predominantly black community of Hazlehurst , Mississippi early in the morning- killing 29 people- most of the victims were African-American. Hazlehurst, Mississippi -that rings a bell- the small town located 30 miles south of the states capital- Jackson was the birthplace of the great bluesman Robert Johnson – in 1911. They have a statue of Johnson at the courthouse and his birth home is located near the court house.

  • Born on this date- hockey great Brendan Shanahan who played in the NHL from 1987-2009 for the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers. The left winger scored 656 goals, 1354 assists in his career and he was also a player who wasn’t afraid to mix it up- he had 2489 career penalty minutes. During his career Shanahan had 17 Gordie Howe Hat Tricks- which is -scoring a goal, having an assist and getting into a fight in a game.  According to research the only player to have more Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in their career is Rick Tocchet with 18. Brendan Shanahan was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
