The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is “Yesterday’s Papers”- the lead off track on the great Between The Buttons album which was released on January 20, 1967. The song is credited to the team of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards but like the Lennon-McCartney team it didn’t necessarily mean both worked on a particular song. In this case Mick Jagger is the sole author. The song picks up where he left off on a number of songs on Aftermath- going after a woman. In this case most likely against Chrissie Shrimpton who at this point had become yesterday’s papers- the new girl in his life Marianne Faithfull would later call the song ‘ a horrible public humiliation of Chrissie.” Musically it would have fit onto the Aftermath album as well. Brian Jones plays the vibraphone and Jack Nitzsche who seems to always be around on Rolling Stones recordings in this time period- plays the harpsichord. The Rolling Stones never released this as a single but Chris Farlowe later did.
