HAN’S WORST HITS OF THE 70’S- “PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC”- WILD CHERRY

Han’s Worst Hits of the 70’s goes local today- the group Wild Cherry were from the area where I am from. It was all good and nice that local guys had success but I’ve always hated this song with a passion. They got their name from a cough syrup box. Again one hit wonders- this song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the R&B charts also. It was written by Robert Parissi who was also the lead singer. It was big news in the Ohio Valley when these fellows hit it big- having a #1 song is a big deal indeed.  I think the most annoying part of the song for me- is the singing dreadful especially when he get to the ‘play that funky music white” and ’til you die”

In 1990 Vanilla Ice released his version of Play That Funky Music” as an A-side but the B-side “Ice Ice Baby” became the hit- later it was re-released and went to #4. Vanilla Ice didn’t give Robert Parissi the songwriting credit and later Parissi was awarded $500,000 due to copyright infringement.

  1. Ice just tried to rob everyone…The bad thing about this one is not only is it…what it is… it’s also soooo worn out.

  2. It fascinates me, in a trainwreck sort of way…

That voice of his does not match that face. I had the same problem with Bon Scott. The dude did not look like what that voice told me he should look like.

  3. Like Styx, I actually like this. Tonight I was going to do a post about the worst album I own. I got 47 seconds in and then thought, no.

    • Singularity by Australian metalcore band Northlane. Chunk chunk chunk guitars and shouted/deathgrowl vocals. One song, the title track, is saving it from being thrown out. That one does not have the petulant screaming. Oh, the cover is good too.
