MY MUSIC LISTENING JOURNAL: DAY 317- MONDAY DECEMBER 31, 2018

ALBUMS

Bloodandcho.jpg

  • ELVIS COSTELLO: BLOOD & CHOCOLATE: 1986: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: 1986 was a great year for The King- he released two of his finest albums- King of America in February and Blood & Chocolate in October. The albums used different producers and musicians- this one went back to long time EC producer Nick Lowe and The Attractions. Both albums outstanding but this one has more of the old original EC sound to it- at least to my ears.

  • XTC: WHITE MUSIC: 1978: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Starting my march through the XTC catalog. An energetic punk debut album from a group that would over the years be one that constantly changed.. Radios in Motion, This Is Pop, Statue Of Liberty and a version of All Along The Watchtower favorites.

US release by London Records

  • THE ROLLING STONES: AFTERMATH: 1966: I am loving The Rolling Stones 1965-66 period of late. This album came out the same year as Revolver and Pet Sounds- and in comparison it is miles behind those two albums but it was an important jump for The Rolling Stones- writing all new material for the first time. Loving the sounds that Brian Jones made to songs on this one.

  • THE ROLLING STONES: BETWEEN THE BUTTONS: 1967: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:  My favorite Rolling Stones album of late. A great start to 1967. All Jagger-Richards songs. The thing I love about this album is so many great songs that haven’t been played to death on classic rock radio. In fact I can’t remember the last time I heard any of the songs on this album- on the radio. Sounds fresh.

Kinda Kinks.jpg

  • THE KINKS: KINDA KINKS: 1965: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: 10 of the dozen songs were written by Ray Davies. Without Ray Davies writing I don’t think they would have went far as a ‘covers’ band. An improvement on the debut album. They are sounding like The Kinks now.

  • CYNDI LAUPER: SHE’S SO UNUSUAL: 1983: This was a totally out of left field smash.  She picked great material- Prince [When You Were Mine} Jules Shear {All Through The Night}. Robert Hazard {Girls Just Want To Have Fun} Tom Gray of The Brains[ Money Changes Everything} There were 4 Top 5 singles and 5 Top 40 hits from this album. The album is top heavy- the first 6 songs are outstanding- the last four sound like filler. A fun listen.

  1. Aftermath is the one for me from your list. “Paint It Black,” “Lady Jane,” “Under My Thumb” and last but not least, “Going Home,” clocking in at 11 minutes and 35 seconds! Whew!

  2. Aftermath is the one that does it for me from your list. “Paint It Black,” “Lady Jane,” “Under My Thumb” and last but not least, “Going Home,” clocking in at 11 minutes and 35 seconds. Whew! An epic track for its day.
