It was fifty years ago today- Thursday December 19, 1968 the six-time presidential candidate from the Socialist Party of America Norman Thomas finally quit running at the age of 84. Maybe running for president was something in the water-of Marion, Ohio. Thomas was born in Marion- the home town of POTUS #29 Warren G. Harding.
Norman Thomas always seemed to be running for something- in the mid to late 20’s he ran in quick succession for Governor of New York in 1924, Mayor of New York City in 1925, New York State Senate 1926, Alderman 1927 and for Mayor of New York again in 1929 in 1934 he would run for the US Senate New York. He lost every race.
1928 was the first time Thomas ran for President of the United States- he would run again in 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948.
Thomas stayed active and involved in issues until his death. In 1966 William F. Buckley selected Norman Thomas to be the first guest on his television show “Firing Line.” Interesting discussion- Mr. Thomas had it right on Vietnam.
