It was fifty years ago today- Monday December 16, 1968- the American electoral college cast their votes in the 1968 presidential election with the electors meeting in their individual states. The electors all across the country voted for their party’s candidate- except for Dr. Lloyd Bailey one of the 13 electors from North Carolina. Nixon won North Carolina in November but Bailey cast his vote for George Wallace instead of Milhous Nixon. In the final vote instead of 302 electoral votes Nixon received 301, Hubert H. Humphrey 191 and Wallace 46. Richard Milhous Nixon would take over the presidency on January 20, 1969.
