The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is- It’s All Over Now.  I had long thought that It’s All Over Now was an original Jagger/ Richards song but it was written by Bobby and Shirley Womack.  There are two stories about  this one is -Bobby Womack asked his manager to get The Stones to record his song and when they did he hated it until the royalty checks started to come in. The other story is that Womack didn’t want The Stones to record it and told Mick to get his own song but that the great Sam Cooke convinced Womack to let The Stones record it.

The original by Womack’s group The Valentinos released in 1964 only spent 2 weeks in the Hot 100 peaking at #94. The Rolling Stones had much more success with it- it went to #1 in the UK- their first #1 and #26 in the US Hot 100.

The Rolling Stones first heard the song when they appeared on the DJ Murray The K’s [ the self proclaimed 5th Beatle} radio show. Murray played the Valentinos song It’s All Over Now for them and they liked it saying it was their kind of song- nine days later they recorded it.

  1. Great track. On the first cassette I bought, a stones compilation called stone age. Released by decca. Came bundled with get yer ya ya’s out, an album I didn’t like at first. Too much raw power and brilliance for a 10 year old!
