The 10th of the 16 #1 singles in 1968 is Grazing In The Grass by Hugh Masekela which held the #1 slot for two weeks the weeks of July 20 and July 27. This was the last song that they recorded for the album and it only took a half hour- it was just filler and it went to #1. It was the second #1 song in 1968 that was an instrumental- the other being “Love Is Blue.” Before 1968 the last instrumental to go to #1 was “Telstar: by The Tornadoes in 1962. After “Grazing In The Grass” the final instrumental #1 of the 1960’s would be in 1969 Henry Mancini and His Orchestra “Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet.” This would also be another 1968 one-hit wonder- the only Top 40 hit in Hugh Masekela’s career. He passed away this January at the age of 78.
What a variety in 1968… Tighten Up, Hello Goodbye, Green Tambourine, and this…
The year was all over the place– two instrumentals hit #1.
Everyone had a chance to have a hit. Songs that have nothing in common. I do like this instrumental.
It didn’t hit me until seeing all of the blogs on 1968…what a year of change after the Love fest of 1967.
i saw an article this week comparing this year to 1968 as far as it being a nightmare year… the music was better in 1968 without a doubt. 1968 had that going for it.
It was more down to earth and less flowery…I agree…it still kept the variety and that is what I miss about older eras.
There is no variety today. None at all. Garbage is garbage sad to say…. A lot of great songs in 1968 from all over the place.
I think the music powers to be now treat music as disposable…and so it is…
In 2068… will they look back on 2018 or 1968 in music? I think I know the answer.
2068 i wonder what music will sound like than- 50 years from now…can only be better is my guess.
I think some of the good will come back around. Hopefully they learn from mistakes.
