It was fifty years ago- the 6th #1 song of 1968- from the heights of Otis Redding and The Dock Of The Bay– back to earth with more sap- Honey by Bobby Goldsboro. This song hit #1 the week after Dr. King’s assassination and left the #1 spot the week of Robert Kennedy’s assassination. It was written by Bobby Russell who would later right a much better song “The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia.” “Honey” has been listened by some as one of the worst if not THE worst song of all time. I don’t know if it is the worst but it has to be on the short list. It would be Goldsboro’s only #1 hit.
This is such a sad song 😦
Interesting you point out it’s often listed as one of the worst songs of all time, as a good friend of mine would agree with that assessment. I think it’s OK, but a sappy song nonetheless as you point out.
This song was played ad nauseum on easy-listening radio stations. I worked at one of them. I still wince at the mention of “Honey”.
That had to be torture!
Would have to agree it’s up there on list of worst songs – the lyrics are what does it it for me.
I’d forgotten about this song. I was only twelve and I knew enough to “turn the dial” when it came on.
You obviously at a young age had good taste in music.
