The 5th #1 song of 1968 is the first great one to hold down that spot in the year. Otis Redding’s classic “{Sittin’ On} The Dock Of The Bay” which held down the #1 spot for four weeks in a row from March 16th until it fell out on April 13th.
{Sittin’ On} The Dock Of The Bay was written by Otis Redding and guitarist Steve Cropper. The song was recorded shortly before Redding’s tragic death in December 1967. Redding was inspired to write it in August 1967 while sitting on a rented houseboat in California. The song was later completed with Cropper. Dock Of The Bay would become Redding’s biggest hit and an enduring one. I don’t know I’ve probably heard it a thousand times over the years and this is a song that I never tire of- it sounds as fresh to my ears today as it did the first time. Not only one of the greatest songs of 1968 but of all times.
Yes, it is a great song, good music lasts forever.
Wow, it’s hard to believe this song is 50 years old! I love this song!
It is too bad he never lived to see it become his biggest hit.
😦
Beautiful!
I love that tune and agree it doesn’t get boring. In general, I’m a big fan of the music that came out of Stax in the ‘60s!
i like Stax over Motown. Dock Of The Bay is just a perfect song.
You know, as somebody who also digs Motown and did so long before “discovering” Stax, I think nowadays I also prefer the Memphis soul label.
I like the grittiness- realness of the Stax stuff- also might be that the Motown classics have been played to death….
I like the Motown sound and groove, but it is a bit like a formula and as such gets repetitive relatively quickly.
Very well put- Formula. I don’t get that from Stax.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Same here. Perfection.
