The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Mona [I Need You Baby.} Mona was written and first performed by Elias McDaniel- better known as Bo Diddley one of the bigger influences on the early Stones sound. It was the b-side of his single “Hey, Bo Diddley” released in 1957. The song was written as praise for a 45 year old exotic dancer in Detroit. The song became the template for Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.” The song appeared on The Rolling Stones debut album -in the UK- but not until their third album in the US. Crazy. The Stones version stays true to the Diddley version with the guitar work even outdoing Diddley.
Love that tremolo!
I could hear that riff all day and night.
