The third #1 song of 1968 on the Billboard Hot 100 was Green Tambourine by The Lemon Pipers. Green Tambourine spent one week at #1 and like the previous #1 song “Judy In Disguise [With Glasses} by John Fred and His Playboy Band- Green Tambourine was a ‘one hit wonder’ for The Lemon Pipers. Green Tambourine was written by Paul Baka who was also the producer of the song. It is a song about busking- the song tells the story of a street musician pleading for money. Green Tambourine is considered by many as the first bubblegum pop song to go to #1. The band thought of themselves a straight ahead rock group and were reluctant to even record it but did because of pressure from the record company. After the success of Green Tambourine they were pressured to record more ‘funny -money music’ as they called it. They never duplicated their success and after two albums disbanded.
