The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Route 66. Route 66 is the first song on The Rolling Stones first full length album titled The Rolling Stones. Route 66 was an old song. It was written by Bobby Troup who got the idea for the song while traveling from Pennsylvania to California by car. This was in 1941. He thought about writing a song about Route 40 but his wife said suggested “Get your kicks on Route 66.” Troup wrote the song on their ten day journey across the country.

Route 66 was first performed by Nat King Cole as King Cole Trio in 1946. Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters had a hit with it in 1946 as well. The song over the years has been recorded by diverse numerous artists- Chuck Berry, Depeche Mode, Them, Glenn Frey, The Cramps,  The Manhattan Transfer etc…

Route 66 had been a song that The Rolling Stones had been performing for a while in concerts over the year prior to recording it. The Stones version is a lot faster than previous versions- they put the pedal to the metal. Very uptempo and full of energy.A great start to their first album.
