The Rolling Stones Song of the day is Money. Money[That’s What I Want} was written by Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford and recorded by Barrett Strong in 1959. It was the first hit single for Motown. It has been a durable song over the years- the original went to #2, The Beatles covered it, The Stones soon thereafter and in 1979 the Flying Lizards had a totally different take on it which is my favorite version of all. It has been covered also many more times by a wide variety of artists.
Barrett Strong’s original-
The Beatles version of Money
and finally The Flying Lizards
The best things in life are free, but you can give them to the birds and bees.
I need money.
That’s what I want.
(That’s what I want. That’s what I want.)
That’s what I want, that ‘s what I want.
(That’s what I want. That’s what I want.)
Your love gives me such a thrill, but your love don’t pay my bills.
I need money.
That’s what I want.
(That’s what I want. That’s what I want.)
That’s what I want, that ‘s what I want.
(That’s what I want. That’s what I want.)
Money don’t get ev’rything, it’s true, but what it don’t get I can’t use.
I need money.
That’s what I want.
(That’s what I want. That’s what I want.)
That’s what I want, that ‘s what I want.
(That’s what I want. That’s what I want.)
Money, lots of money.
(That’s what I want, uh huh.)
Whole lot of money.
(That’s what I want, uh huh.)
Uh huh. Ah, ah, oh, yeah.
(That’s what I want, uh huh. That’s what I want.)
(That’s what I want, uh huh. That’s what I want.)
Money, lots of money.
(That’s what I want, uh huh.)

All great versions. I’m just so used to hearing Lennon’s voice in this one. I do like the Flying Lizards version. I haven’t heard it in years.
I had thought the Flying Lizards version was a bigger hit than it was -it just missed the Top 40. Maybe the radio station I listened to just played it a lot back then. Yes I like all the versions too.
I remember it on MTV more than radio…of course at one time MTV was the new radio
maybe that is where I heard it all the time MTV
I have to admit that THE FLYING LIZARDS version has always been a favorite of mine!
