It was fifty years ago today- October 20, 1968 former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy wed Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis on his private island of Skorptos. It would be a controversial event many people in the United States who couldn’t understand why Jackie, 39 would marry Onassis who was 62.
Why did she marry Onassis? It was four months after the assassination of Robert Kennedy. She was fearing for her life and her children’s lives- “If they’re killing Kennedy’s then my children are targets. I want to get out of this country” she said. Marrying Onassis gave her both security and the privacy she needed.
Onassis provided Jackie O with $3 million and also set up trusts for her children Caroline and John Jr. of a million dollars each. In marrying Onassis, Jackie gave up $200,000 from the Kennedy family a year which was part of the pre-nuptial agreement when she married JFK and the $10,000 a year pension she was getting from the US Government. She also gave up her secret service protection. They remained married until Aristotle Onassis died in 1975. She came out of it with a $26,000,000 settlement from his estate. Jackie O died in 1994 at the age of 64.
