I started The Beatles Song of the Day back on March 10th with I Saw Her Standing There- now seven months later it comes to and end with Real Love. Real Love was originally written by John Lennon but was fine tuned for the Anthology 2 album release by the surviving Beatles in 1995. It was the second ‘new’ Beatles song for the project following Free As A Bird. The single reached #4 in the UK and #11 in the US. I think Ringo summed it up well when he stated “”Recording the new songs didn’t feel contrived at all, it felt very natural and it was a lot of fun, but emotional too, at times. But it’s the end of the line, really. There’s nothing more we can do as the Beatles.” Indeed, doing the two songs fine- any more would have been overkill. Real Love was originated by John to be part of a play called The Ballad Of John and Yoko. John’s original demo was recorded in 1977. John Lennon: double-tracked lead vocals, piano: Paul McCartney: backing vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, bass guitar, double bass, harmonium, harpsichord, percussion: George Harrison: backing vocals, electric guitars, acoustic guitar, percussion. Ringo Starr: backing vocals, drums, percussion: Jeff Lynne: backing vocal, guitar: Produced by Jeff Lynne.

Lost like some forgotten dreams
Seems that all I really was doing
Was waiting for you
Playing with their little toys
Seems like all they really were doing
Was waiting for love
No need to be alone
It’s real love, it’s real
Yes, it’s real love, it’s real
Exactly where my life will go
Seems that all I really was doing
Was waiting for love
No need to be afraid
It’s real love, it’s real
Yes, it’s real love, it’s real
But in my heart, I wanted more
Seems like all I really was doing
Was waiting for you
Don’t need to be alone
It’s real love, it’s real
It’s real love, it’s real
Yes, it’s real love, it’s real
It’s real love, it’s real
Yes, it’s real love, it’s real
It’s real love, it’s real
Yes, it’s real love, it’s real
It’s real love, it’s real
I’m sure hardcore Beatles fans have appreciated your efforts. I have enjoyed them!
Thank you. I feel kind of sad that I am done with the songs. It was fun.
Have you done song of the day with anyone else? If so, who? If not, would you consider doing it with another group?
The Beatles is it- I have thought a little about it- may give that idea a go soon.. Thinking of Bob Dylan or The Rolling Stones as possibilities.. With Bob Dylan that might be a 3 or 4 year project!
Yah, Dylan would take awhile. I think they have college courses they teach on him!
First off, these write up are great and thanks for doing them…. that being said; I HATE this song it is by far my least favorite “Beatles” song. When it first was released I felt it sounded as if Paul, George, and Ringo were just has-been, far past their prime, going through the motions and John sounds like he’s dead; like the audio equivalent of looking at a photograph of a person and knowing, without any context, that person is dead. Listening to it recently, it hasn’t grown on me at all, unlike “Free as a Bird” which I didn’t really like at first
Thank you.. It is hard evaluating these songs-Free As A Bird and Real Love…are they really Beatles songs?
I would say no, although Free as a Bird sounds closer to a “real” Beatles song than Real Love
Thanks for going through them all. It made me pull some back out that I hadn’t listened to in while. Real Love sounds more like a John Lennon solo song unlike Free As a Bird that sounds like The Beatles.. to me anyway.
Thanks- and I agree. I am glad they stopped at that.
No no no no no
