It was fifty years ago today- September 17th and 18th- 1968 back to back no hitters were pitched in the series between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
No -hitters are rare. I think myself lucky in my 50 years as a fan and having gone to hundreds of games to have seen two- John Candelaria’s no hitter in 1976 and a combination no hitter Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon in 1997. There had to be hundreds of fans who back in 1968 witnessed two no hitters on back to back nights in San Francisco.
On September 17th the Giants Gaylord Perry pitched a no-hitter beating the Cardinals 1-0. 1968 was The Year of The Pitcher- there were a lot of 1-0 games that season. The next day the Cardinals Ray Washburn no hit the Giants 2-0. The only other time this has happened- back to back no -hitters at the same venue was in 1917 at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis. To show how rare a no-hitter is- in the 50 year history of the San Diego Padres they have never had a pitcher for their team pitch a no-hitter.
