It was fifty years ago today- September 17, 1968- the Detroit Tigers clinched the American League pennant. They would be facing the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series starting in October. It was a magical year for the Detroit Tigers- led by Denny McLain who won 31 games and the pinch-hitting heroics of Gates Brown. The Tigers would finish with a record of 103-59 finishing 12 games ahead of the second place Baltimore Orioles.
