It was fifty years ago today- September 17, 1968- NBC-TV premiered Julia starring Diahann Carroll. What was revolutionary here is- this was the first television show to depict an African- American woman in a non-stereotypical role. Julia Baker was a widowed single mom who was a nurse. Her husband had been killed in Vietnam.Julia’s son Corey was played by Marc Copage- playing a 6 year old when the series began.
The first season the show ranked #7 then dropped off to #28 the second year and in its third and final season it didn’t rank in the top 30. The show lasted 3 seasons and 86 episodes.
Can’t say I remember it. Of course I was 5 at the time so there’s that. But don’t remember ever seeing it in syndication.
I was seven at the time it came on- I can remember it but not all that well.
I do remember this show.
This clip may have wall-to-wall cringeworthy lines (by today’s sensibilities) but nonetheless the series had a kind and gentle spirit attached to it that won it millions of fans back in the day.
