The Beatles Song of the Day is Come Together. Come Together was the first song on The Beatles Abbey Road album and was released as a double A- single along with Something. Come Together was written by John Lennon. John would later remark that it was one of his favorite Beatles tracks When John came in to work at Abbey Road on this in late July 1969 it was the first song he had for Abbey Road and the first Beatle work he had done since April’s “The Ballad of John And Yoko” his time had been spent with Yoko and he they were in a car accident in Scotland in June. Where John had been the dominating force in the early years of The Beatles at this point Paul was the main driver of the ship. Come Together started as a campaign song for acid guru Timothy Leary who was running for Governor of California in 1969 against Dutch Reagan. Leary was a big Beatles fan. Leary and his wife were invited up to Montreal for John and Yoko’s bed-in and sang along with Give Peace A Chance- and Leary and his wife Rosemary were mentioned in the song. The next day John asked Leary if there was anything he could do to help his campaign and Leary asked for a song. Leary’s campaign slogan was “Come together join the party” the ‘come together’ part he had nicked from the I Ching. John worked on a little song for Leary made a demo and gave it to him. Meanwhile when John returned to England he started working on a version for The Beatles. Leary was in prison on a drug conviction when he heard Come Together on Abbey Road and was a little upset that he had been passed over.  The song was pretty much made up in the studio- a funky sounding song with mostly non-sense lyrics. The song lyrics did mention “old flat top” which John had taken from Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me”and this led to John being sued for plagiarism.  John settled the suit with the publisher by recording three songs on future solo albums. John Lennon: vocal , rhythm guitar, lead guitar, handclaps: Paul McCartney: harmony  vocal, bass, electric piano: George Harrison: guitar: Ringo Starr: drums, maracas: Produced by George Martin.

One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
