When U.S. Senator Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut gave his nominating speech for George McGovern on the convention floor- August 28, 1968- he gave Mayor Daley of Chicago the business. The Mayor responded by yelling “F. U. you Jew SOB.” 1968 what a year. The video is below.
This is amazing footage. Daily was a thug in some many ways. It is shocking how much he is still revered in Chicago. But I’m sure there was another side to him–there had to be. None-the-less, ’68 was definitely one of our country’s most turbulent years. It was a fantastic year in music too–The White Album, Beggars Banquet, James Brown, Live at the Apollo…
I guess Daley kept the trains running on time maybe that is why they seemed to have loved him. I tend to agree with you- he was a thug. I was reading and right after the event- the polls were behind what he did and his actions- and shockingly after Kent State- it was the same thing- but I think history has not treated either even highly- from the aspect of how the authorities acted at the time.
1968 was insane. I’ve always been fascinated by that year- maybe because I was seven at the time and have memories of it. Yes a lot of great great music that year too! At the time I wasn’t really aware of that though.
Well, I was three at the time so I don’t remember anything about the politics. I do remember The Monkees television show and Dragnet and Mannix and the Archies Sugar, Sugar.
