It was fifty years ago today- August 22, 1968 when Pope Paul VI became the first pope to visit South America when he arrived in Bogota, Columbia. Paul VI would spend parts of three days in Bogota- attending the 39th Eucharistic Congress. In 1965 Paul VI became the first pope to visit the United States. Pope Paul VI was a globetrotter compared to earlier pope’s. He was the first pope to leave Italy in over 100 years, the first to fly in an airplane and the first to visit the Holy Land in 1964.
