The Beatles Song Of The Day– Rocky Raccoon

The Beatles Song of the Day is Rocky Raccoon. Rocky Raccoon like all songs written by either John Lennon or Paul McCartney are credited as Lennon- McCartney. Paul McCartney was the writer of Rocky Raccoon. By this point in Beatles history any collaboration on songs between John and Paul were pretty minimal. These was very little of the old “eyeball to eyeball’ sessions of the early years. Another of The Beatles White Album songs that was written or began during their Transcendental Meditation retreat with the Maharishi in Rishikesh, India in 1968. The song was originally called Rocky Sassoon but was changed to Raccoon because it sounded more like a cowboy name. The song is clearly a Paul song- a story song about a love triangle in the old west. Paul looked at is as a one act play and giving the characters in it some dialog.  If The White Album had been a single album this is surely one of the songs that wouldn’t have survived the cut but i would rank it as a decent tune- and it fits in well with the diversity of The White Album.  Paul McCartney: vocal, acoustic guitar: John Lennon: backing vocal, harmonica, harmonium, bass: George Harrison: backing vocal: Ringo Starr: drums: George Martin: piano. Produced by George Martin

Now somewhere in the Black Mountain Hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
And one day his woman ran off with another guy
Hit young Rocky in the eye
Rocky didn’t like that
He said, “I’m gonna get that boy”
So one day he walked into town
Booked himself a room in the local saloon
Rocky Raccoon checked into his room
Only to find Gideon’s Bible
Rocky had come, equipped with a gun
To shoot off the legs of his rival
His rival it seems, had broken his dreams
By stealing the girl of his fancy
Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy
Now she and her man, who called himself Dan
Were in the next room at the hoe down
Rocky burst in, and grinning a grin
He said, “Danny boy, this is a showdown”
But Daniel was hot, he drew first and shot
And Rocky collapsed in the corner
Now the doctor came in, stinking of gin
And proceeded to lie on the table
He said, “Rocky, you met your match”
And Rocky said, “Doc, it’s only a scratch
And I’ll be better, I’ll be better, Doc, as soon as I am able”
Now Rocky Raccoon, he fell back in his room
Only to find Gideon’s Bible
Gideon checked out, and he left it, no doubt
To help with good Rocky’s revival

    • That is usually the case- except of course with Ringo- he wrote a couple of his own songs but the others- John and Paul would write his songs..not that he did THAT many songs- maybe an average of one an album [of course early on Ringo sang covers of other artists songs}

  1. The White Album definitely had what I would call filler tunes. While the lyrics of “Rocky Raccoon” give it a certain cinematic quality, I would agree it’s not among the album’s best tunes.

In retrospect, perhaps The While Album shouldn’t have been a double LP. And I say all of this as a huge Beatles fan, as you know!😀

I actually further reflected on this yesterday when you highlighted Piggies. Even with all the “flawed” songs, The White Album still is a gem in The Beatles catalog, in my humble opinion.

If you think about it, to find a record with only strong material is extremely rare. I can’t think of one Beatles album that doesn’t have at least one or two tracks I feel a bit lukewarm about. Of course, given how many outstanding songs The Beatles have written, the bar is perhaps higher than for many other artists.

    • Good point- in writing about The White Album songs here the past couple weeks- and all told it will take a month to do the album- there is a lot of filler along with many gems. I wonder if any other group at that time would have gotten away with it as they did? The White Album is the favorite Beatles album of many people. The “what songs would a single album have had on it” game is a fun one to play. In a way though part of the charm of the album for me is the wide variety of styles on it including the goofy throwaways they were working on. I would love to have my hands on tapes of every second the beatles spent in the studio.

  2. What I like about the White album is the variety of the album as a whole. That is what makes it work as a double album. You have Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter and Goodnight and everything in between.
