Over a year ago rock critic Bill Wyman… no not THE Bill Wyman of Rolling Stone fame– ranked all The Beatles songs- from worst to best- a good discussion starter article although I disagree with a lot of his selections– what an impossible task that would be.

  1. I agree – lists like that are just subjective. Great for discussion though. I think my own ranking on these songs would change every hour. I couldn’t commit to a definitive ranking.

    • This is true- i think your mood at any given time can change the order of your selections. As far as The Beatles go-a few songs are always at the top- Strawberry Fields Forever and In My Life especially the rest change from time to time. I have always enjoyed lists… In reading Wyman’s article I kind of get a feeling he is not a Beatles fanatic which of course is ok…

    • He’s a music critic, which means he has to be too cool for the room by definition. lol

I think the only consistency for me would be to rank “Revolution #9” at the very bottom. After that… even a top 25 list hurts because I know so many songs can’t make it in. It’s an embarrassment of riches!

    • You know you are right about that- most rock critics have to take the too cool for the room stance! I didn’t think about that when I was reading the article!! excellent point…. Yes a top 25 would be difficult to say the least.. I can’t get past a top 2 without my head hurting.

    • I agree I think he just didn’t like it… I don’t think he’s a fan by some of his comments on some of the songs…

  2. Agree with him or not, I guess you have to give him at least some points for trying the impossible. This is why I would never want to be a music critic.

If I would be forced to select one Beatles song only, I would go for “A Day In The Life” as well, so I guess I agree with him in his no. 1. However, pretty much everything else is debatable to me.

For example, I would rank “If I Needed Someone” much higher than he did. Why? Because I simply dig the tune. I think this illustrates something else: The whole exercise is highly subjective – I don’t care which methodology you use!

    • There are no final answer- it is all subjective. A song I may love you may be on the fence about– that would make neither of us wrong.
