HARRISON ‘JACK’ SCHMITT- THE LAST ASTRONAUT TO WALK ON THE MOON- 83 TODAY

Harrison “Jack” Schmitt turns 83 today. There were 12 astronauts who walked on the moon during the Apollo missions- and Harrison Schmitt on Apollo 17 was the final astronaut to walk on the moon. Only four remain- Buzz Aldrin from Apollo 11 is now 88, David Scott from Apollo 15 is 86, Charles Duke from Apollo 16 is 82 and Schmitt at 83.

Schmitt was the first scientist-astronaut to go into space-and remains the only professional scientist to have flown beyond the earths low orbit. He is the last remaining crew member of Apollo 17. He resigned from NASA in 1975 to run for the U.S. Senate and won- serving the state of New Mexico. He was defeated in his run for re-election in 1982.
