ALBUMS

  • XTC: SKYLARKING: 1986: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: XTC’s best album in my opinion- the making of the album was a battle between producer Todd Rundgren and XTC frontman Andy Partridge. Partridge may not have been happy but the end results were great. The controversial “Dear God” was left off the initial pressings. It would have been a hit if not for its point of view on the subject matter. Favorite songs- Grass, The Meeting Place, Earn Enough For Us, Big Day and Summer Cauldron.

Complete Them (1964-1967)

  • THEM: THE COMPLETE THEM: 1964-1967: 2015: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: 3 cd set is the most complete album of Them- Van The Man’s group before his solo career. I would think anyone hearing Van’s voice for the first time with Them would have had to have thought that this guy is going to be a major force. Them’s two albums The Angry Young Them and Them Again are here- plus all the singles, demos, sessions and rarities. Their greatest songs- Gloria, Here Comes The Night, Mystic Eyes, Baby Please Don’t Go and a cover of Dylan’s It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.   69 songs in all on the three discs. Them would continue after Morrison left in 1967 for a solo career- that isn’t represented here- and well once Van left….

listened to the 70’s on 7 replay of American Top 40 from the week of June 29, 1974- pretty bland week of music in my opinion.

  1. I’m glad the Complete Them contains “Mighty Like a Rose”… I bought the Story of Them in the 90s and that was one song it missed. Why I like it so much I don’t know.

    • That is a good one for sure… My wife gets a big kick out of Van sometimes- she will walk in and sing “and you breathe in you breathe out you breathe in you breathe out you breathe in you breathe out……

  2. Skylarking was re-released a year or so ago. The band had always thought it’s sound a bit weak and then an engineer suggested that polarity had been reversed somewhere in the mastering. They put the wires in properly and tried again – to be honest I can’t tell the difference! The cover (what Partridge originally wanted) is oh-so slightly different too – Chris
