On this date fifty years ago- May 29, 1968 Manchester United F.C. became the first team from England to win the European Cup by beating Benifica of Portugal 4-1 at Wembley Stadium in London. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes but Manchester exploded with three goals in extra time- George Best, Brian Kidd and Bobby Charlton all scoring for Manchester United. The game was played before 92,225 fans. Manchester United has won the European Cup twice since in 1999 and 2008. The last English team to win it was Chelsea in 2012.
The other day Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the final 3-1 to win their 3rd straight European Cup- Read Madrid has won the cup a record 13 times- six times now this century.
