1968 was a revolutionary year around the world and on May 26, 1968 in Iceland a new law went into effect. In Iceland they had changed the law back in 1793 from driving on the left side to the right side but it was ignored. Finally after World War II the movement got going to really change things- laws were past etc and May 26th, 1968 was the date the law could go into effect. At 6 AM in the morning it would go into effect. Over night 1662 signs in the country had to be changed. After the change for a period of time the accident rate in Iceland went down due to drivers overcompensating to the new law and the increased risk of driving on the right side but eventually the accident rates returned to normal. The injury the day of the change was a boy on a bicycle having his leg broken. When it England back in 2003 we rented a car and drove from London to Liverpool. It was odd driving from what was the passenger seat in America and driving on the left hand side of the road. It took a little getting used to but we made it to Liverpool, driving around in Liverpool and returning to London in one piece. The day the car was returned was the only problem. The car rental place was a block or so away from where we were staying. I started driving on the right and Mrs. Postcard quickly corrected me -luckily there was no traffic coming.

  1. For a real thrill, try driving in India. Officially, they drive on the left lanes, but chaos is what usually takes place. I ended up turning in my rental and hired drivers or took buses.
