If you were born after say 1970 and can identify who Charles “Bebe” Rebozo was I would be very impressed. Twenty years ago today Charles “Bebe” Rebozo died at the age of eighty-eight. Rebozo was the best friend of our 37th President- Richard Milhous “Tricky Dick” Nixon. During Nixon’s presidency it wasn’t uncommon to be watching the evening news and they would be reporting that President Nixon was in Key Biscayne, Florida visiting his friend Bebe Rebozo.

Charles Rebozo was a Florida banker and businessman. He got the nickname “Bebe” because he was the youngest of twelve children- “Bebe” in spanish means ‘Baby.” Nixon and Rebozo met in 1950 through Florida House of Representative member George Smathers-{who was also a friend of Jack Kennedy’s.} Smathers recommended Key Biscayne was a vacation area for Nixon. Smathers had Rebozo take Nixon deep sea fishing and so began a friendship which would last until Nixon’s death in 1994.

During the Nixon presidency, Rebozo’s Key Biscayne home was often referred to be journalists as the “Winter White House.” Reportedly Nixon and Rebozo were swimming at Rebozo’s house when Nixon was informed of the Watergate break-in. From all I”ve read about Nixon he wasn’t a man with many friends and hanging out with Rebozo would be a relaxing time for him. Rebozo would be accused of accepting covert payments of over $100,000 for Nixon. After the Nixon presidency Rebozo was the subject of a bank fraud investigation but he repaid the loan with interest and no complaint was filed by the bank.

After the Nixon presidency { Rebozo was at the White House when Nixon resigned} Rebozo’s name left the news more or less. Rebozo was always kind of a background figure- a name you would hear often during the Nixon presidency but he was a loyal friend to Nixon- you would hear his name and maybe see a picture of Nixon and Rebozo but I can’t ever recall hearing him interviewed.

Below is his obit from the Washington Post.

    • Rebozo really seemed to keep a low profile. No question he was a mysterious figure. I can’t recall any interviews. It was always “President Nixon is in Key Biscayne at the home of his friend Bebe Rebozo.” I forgot his name was Charles. I guess if you’ve heard the name Bebe Rebozo- it kind of sticks with you!
