On this day in 1941- seventy-seven years ago today- {I double checked the math on that- yes seventy-seven years ago!} The Yankee Clipper Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio got a single driving in a run against the Chicago White Sox. Dimaggio wouldn’t be stopped until July 16th- when his consecutive game hitting streak had reached an incredible 56 games. In the seventy- one years since the closest anyone has gotten to this record is Pete Rose’s 44 game hitting streak back in 1978. No one is ever going to touch this record- I know records are made to be broken yada yada yada but this record is secure. When Rose had his 44 game streak the pressure was incredible and that was before ESPN and before the Internet and 24 hour news. If someone got within two weeks of Dimaggio today the players every move all day long would be recorded- he would be hounded to the point where he couldn’t sleep. Joe Dimaggio was a flawed man without a doubt but what a ballplayer he was. All the old timers that I talked to when I was younger who had followed baseball from those days would always answer “Joe Dimaggio” when I would ask them who the greatest ballplayer they ever saw was.

Below is an article from a couple years ago about Joe D and his streak.

    • A couple weeks ago on some facebook baseball site someone asked if the AL East race was already over… it’s a long season I see now the Red Sox lead is just one game.
