• THE BEATLES FOR SALE: 1964: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: Released in early December 1964. A busy year for The Beatles and I think the cover of the album says it all -they look so tired. 5ive of the fourteen songs are covers, Lennon-McCartney couldn’t keep up with the demand. This would be the last album to have covers. When I think of this album also I think of the later George Harrison quote that sums up 1964 and The Beatles–      “They gave their money and their screams. But we gave our nervous systems, which is a more difficult thing to give.”The album does mark a change in The Beatles sound- a more mature sound which would mark the beginning of the middle period of their career. Favorite songs on it- “I’m A Loser”, “Eight Day’s A Week”, “No Reply”, “Baby’s In Black”. Due to the covers it is an uneven album but it is still great!

  • DEPECHE MODE: THE BEST OF DEPECHE MODE: 2006: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: I am not a big Depeche Mode fan. I have a friend who will travel anywhere on the east coast to see them. I have no desire to see them and this is the only album of theirs that I own. “Personal Jesus” is a great song and I love the Johnny Cash cover. Some other good songs on here too.
  • Today I also listened to Radio George’s -The Neon Beat today- the first hour of the three hours they put out each week.
  • I also listened to a dozen or so songs from Dave Marsh’s book “The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever” for my other post.

  1. “Beatles For Sale” is a fantastic LP. I love the way the first three songs, “No Reply”, “I’m A Loser”, and “Baby’s in Black” sort of fit perfectly together with similar subject matter. And such strong lead vocals by Lennon.

  2. On “Beatles For Sale,” which I’m proud to own on vinyl, I actually dig two of the rock & roll covers: “Rock & Roll Music” and “Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey.” I always thought The Beatles were really great at playing classic rock & roll.

While I definitely have a weak spot for 80s music, the decade in which I grew up, I never warmed much to Depeche Mode.

    • I like the Carl Perkins cover on ‘Beatles For Sale.” We agree on Depeche Mode. A few songs I like the rest- I can live without.
