“Get The Knack” by The Knack was released on this date in 1979.  The Knack’s debut album went to #1 as did their single “My Sharona”-which was the #1 single of 1979. The follow-up single “Good Girls Don’t” went to #11 and then the backlash against them seemed to hit and they quickly faded into obscurity. A lot of people thought their success was due to an advertising campaign -Capital Records had the album cover look a lot like Meet The Beatles,  that their songs had a misogynist attitude, the band didn’t help things by acting arrogant and refusing to give interviews. The album went gold within 13 days of its release, the fastest selling album Capital had since… Meet The Beatles. A lot of people just had a problem with them because they thought success came to easy for them. Their second album in 1980 didn’t do as well and after that no one cared anymore. “Get The Knack” isn’t a bad record though. I will say it sounded better when I was eighteen than it does today.

    • I agree one of those songs that got into your head and stayed there for the rest of the day if not longer.

  1. “My Sharona” is a great song. I remember the whole “New Beatles” marketing promotion from Rolling Stone magazine too, which unfortunately wasn’t swatted by either the band or record label. You’re right, the weight of expectation and the bar was set way, way too high. I think, to an extent Badfinger had the same problem.
