June 2, 1978 Bruce Springsteen dropped one of this best albums into the world- “Darkness On The Edge of Town’ which was his fourth album. “Darkness” was the first Springsteen album I ever owned and it remains on most days my favorite album by The Boss [there are days when “The River” is.}

There had been a three year gap between his breakout album “Born To Run”due to legal issues with his former manager. Back in the 1970’s three years between albums was unheard of- a career ending act. Remember John Lennon sat out 5 years between albums and he was considered to have Ā ‘retired.”

This is a bleak album- Bruce’s first fully adult album in themes. He would continue that with his next album the double album classic “The River.” Bruce was approaching thirty at the time was maturing as a songwriter. Most of the characters in the songs on this album are clearly working class- another theme that would dominate “The River.”

Over the three years when Springsteen couldn’t release anything due to the legal issues he had a backlog of songs written. The selecting of what would be on the album and what wouldn’t be is an interesting one in itself. There were a lot of great songs that didn’t make the cut. It has been said that Springsteen had written 7o songs for this session with 52 of them recorded but some of those not completed. In 2010 a box set was released- a remastering of “Darkness” but more interestingly finally an ‘official” two disc release of songs that didn’t make the original cut back in 1978- and a DVD on the making of the album. All great stuff.

The album in 1978 reached #5 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart- and had two minor hit singles “Prove It All Night ” got to #33 on the Top 100 and “Badlands” just missed the Top 40 peaking at #42. { Bruce has never been a singles artist unless you count the “Born In The USA” and “Tunnel Of Love ” period in the 1980’s}
