The battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest day in American history. The final tally was 22, 717 dead, wounded and missing. One of the bloodiest portions of the battlefield was at this sunken road where fighting took place from 9:30am until 1 pm.  5,600 casualties took place along this 800 yard road, which would forever after be known as Bloody Lane.
