JOHNNY CARSON’S LAST EPISODE OF ‘THE TONIGHT SHOW’- THIS DAY 25 YEARS AGO

It was twenty-five years ago tonight that the late great Johnny Carson hosted his last episode of “The Tonight Show.” His guests that night were Robin Williams and Bette Midler. Carson had been the host of The Tonight Show for thirty years. By the 1970’s he was an American institution. The Tonight Show was already successful when he took over- the first two hosts were Steve Allen and Jack Paar but Carson took it to another level which hasn’t been touched since he left. When Carson retired he pretty much did just that. He died in 2005 at the age of 79.

  1. I live in Carson’s hometown of his childhood. Whenever he visited Norfolk, Nebraska, he stayed at my bosses home. There are dozens of stories about Johnny and his Nebraska experiences. That said, I never did get to personally meet him.

    • That is pretty cool. There was a great PBS program on Carson a few years ago. Interesting fellow. I’ve always found it interesting that some very public people- Carson and President Reagan come to mind immediately- were shy people who somehow came alive when the spotlight was on. I like how Carson when he retired- retired. We have so many athletes and celebrity types who retire and can’t give up the spotlight and crave attention.
