It was a Mother’s Day- May 14, 1967. Mickey Mantle had hit career home run #499 eleven days earlier. When would he connect with the magical #500? The Yankees were at home against the Baltimore Orioles. Stu Miller was pitching for the Orioles. In the bottom of the 7th with the Yankees up 5-4 and a full count on The Mick- Mantle homered into the right-field lower stands for #500. Mantle was the 6th player to reach 500 home runs at that time. Mantle would finish his career in 1968 with 536 home runs. There are now 27 players in the 500 home run club. At one time I could name them all and how many home runs they hit. I can’t do that anymore.
