On this day in 2000 the gates to Strawberry Field in Liverpool were stolen. The thieves took them to a scrap dealer who bought them in good faith but grew suspicious when he heard reports of the theft and realized what he had.
Strawberry Field was a Salvation Army home near Beatle John Lennon grew up. He would go there and play for hours as a child. He would made the place famous with his 1967 hit “Strawberry Fields Forever.’ In 2011 the Salvation Army placed the gates to the former home in storage and put up replicas. I was lucky enough to visit Liverpool in 2003 and visit Beatle sites- including Strawberry Field.
