The first time I visited Washington, D.C. and nearby Mount Vernon-home of George Washington was when I was seven years old. My grandparents took me, it was the first real trip I can remember. It would also prove to be the gateway drug to a life of loving both history and travel. Since then I can’t never get enough of either.
As an adult I have been to Mount Vernon a half dozen times. I got this t-shirt on one of those trips a few years ago. Whenever I go there I always think back on that first trip and I remember all the places my grandparents took me. I was very lucky- I was the first grandchild by a number of years and I was the one who got to go with them since my brother and sister- and cousins were all too young to go on trips. It was with them that I went on my first trip out west and to the south. They have both been gone now for decades- the early 1980’s but I still think of them often and still miss them.
George Washington- has to be the greatest American of all time, with apologies to Father Abraham.
