MY LIFE THROUGH MY T-SHIRT COLLECTION- CIVIL WAR VIRGINIA

IMG_1046

One of the things I am into is the American Civil War. Over the past few decades I have visited most of the major battlefields- some of them many times. Virginia has been a favorite place to visit due to the many battlefields there that are so close to each other. The last trip to the Virginia battlefields was last July. { the t-shirt from above was purchased during the trip before that one- 2014} Near Fredericksburg where we were headquartered at- the battlefields within a half hour drive are- Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville- [where Stonewall Jackson received the wound that would lead to his death- and his arm he lost is buried nearby], The Wilderness, Spotsylvania [one of my favorite battlefields] and the house where Stonewall died.  Drive an hour or so down to Richmond and its Cold Harbor and south of Richmond is Petersburg, then in Richmond you have a number of Civil War related sites. Out a distance from everywhere- is where Lee surrendered to Grant- Appomattox Court House.

On Thursday we are heading to Gettysburg and will stop at Antietam Battlefield in Maryland and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This will be the 21st year in a row with at least one trip to Gettysburg. I wish I had kept count but I’d reckon we’ve been to Gettysburg around 100 times, some years 4-5 times, one year I went there 9 times. Always like stopping at Antietam and Harpers Ferry on the way over or way back home.

The t-shirt has Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee on it- Confederate heroes. I am definitely a Union man though.

  1. I live near The Wilderness battlefield (it’s on the other side of my county). Next time you’re in the area, be sure to visit Graffiti House (near the Battle of Brandy Station) (you can Google it to see how cool it is) and the Exchange Hotel in Gordonsville which was a Civil War hospital.
