The Pittsburgh Steelers finished 11-5 winning the AFC North and advanced to the AFC Championship game where they were clobbered by their nemesis the New England Patriots. Tom Brady torched the Steelers defense. The Steelers finished 12th in overall defense and 7th in offense. On offense they could use a tight end and if an O.J. Howard or David Njoku were available they would be tempted to jump on that but I don’t see that happening. They could also use help at WR- but they have had good luck on taking middle to late round wide receivers and hitting the jackpot so first round- no to that especially with a lot of good receivers in this draft. Same at running back- they could pick up someone later on. The Big Ben era- like the Rodgers era in Green Bay is closing- if they are to win another Super Bowl in the near future they must improve on defense. Linebacker- both inside and outside linebacker is not a deep position for the Steelers, they could also use some help in the defensive backfield where they took two DB’s in round 1 and 2 last year who ended up starting.
With the 30th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select T.J. Watt OLB- Wisconsin- 6’4″ 243 4.68 in 40. This pick addresses a key need-outside linebacker. The brother of the great J.J- not a great athlete but has the good technique and mechanics and his tall lanky frame has room to fill out. Steelers should be happy with this pick so late in round 1.
