On this day in 1912 the British passenger liner the RMS Titanic sunk in the North Atlantic ocean at 2:20 a.m. only two hours and forty minutes after hitting an iceberg. 710 of the 2,227 passengers and crew on board the Titanic survived. The Titanic was on route from Southampton, United Kingdom to New York City. It left on its maiden voyage April 10th, 1912. The Titanic is the second largest ocean liner wreck in history behind its sister the HMHS Britannic which was lost during World War II and most on board survived.
