On this day in 1974 Henry Aaron broke the record that would never be broken. 39 years ago today at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium Henry Aaron in the fourth inning hit a Al Downing pitch into the left field bullpen. #715 and we have a new all-time home run champion. I remember watching that game. It was a Monday Night Baseball Game. What a great thrill it was to see. Babe Ruth was and remains one of my baseball heroes but that night belonged to Aaron. Hank Aaron would end his career a couple years later with 755 home runs.

I remember an interview of Aaron and Willie Mays. Willie said to Hank “If I knew you were going to hit so many I’d have played a while longer.” Another great game: watching Maris in the 154th game of that season.
