ELVIS PRESLEY DRAFTED INTO THE U.S.ARMY- THIS DAY 1958

army14rc1958-march-28

On this day in 1958 Elvis Presley was sworn into the U.S. Army at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. This was a big media event for that time with Elvis being the biggest name in entertainment at that moment. 1958 would be a tragic year for Presley, in August his mother would die at the age of 46 and he was extremely close to her. Presley would exit active duty in March 1960 and although he would go on to more success in movies and in music his career was never the same as it was before he entered the army. When he died in 1977- John Lennon was in Japan. When told that Elvis had died he replied “Elvis died when he went into the army.” He was right.

  1. I was at the dock waving! I had no idea Elvis was on board the ship on his way to Germany though. I was there because my godfather’s son was on board and he was like a big brother to me.
