“Celtic Crush” is a Celtic music radio show  hosted by Larry Kirwan -broadcast every Sunday on SiriusXM channel 30 The Loft from 9am -noon EST [and repeated at 9pm-midnight on Tuesdays, midnight to 3am on Wednesday night-Thursday morning}

Since discovering the show nearly a decade ago it has become not only required listening for me but a highlight of every week. The shows host is  Larry Kirwan an author, musician-most notably the former frontman for the Irish-American rock group Black 47. Larry Kirwan is what makes this program tick. He selects an eclectic mix of songs each week and generally after every three songs you get Larry telling stories of his experiences or stories about the musicians he is playing, or some history of Ireland, etc.  Again, Larry is the key to making this show what it is.He is a master storyteller. He picks great songs. Over the years I have downloaded the songs he plays from ITUNES for my IPOD  that playlist is now at 1465  songs. Listening to Celtic Crush is an education. The show has introduced me to so much as far as music goes that I never knew existed and to a lot of history. I can’t stress enough how Larry Kirwan is the key to this program. They could take his playlists and play the songs and it would be worth listening to for the music- but Larry makes the show go- with his stories and commentary. { I’d also recommend his books “Green Suede Shoes-An Irish-American Odyssey ” and autobiography published in 2005 and his recent “History of Irish Music.”}

What kind of music does Larry Kirwan play on “Celtic Crush?” A wide variety. He celebrates the music of the eight Celtic nations. He plays the old and the new- some artists who you will hear include- Van Morrison, The Pogues, Sinead O’Connor, The Clancy Brothers, Thin Lizzy, Larry’s former band Black 47, Christy Moore, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, The Beatles [three of the four Beatles have Irish roots}, The Waterboys, The Chieftains, John Spillane, Damien Dempsey, Steve Earle, Peatbog Faeries, Lunasa, Solas, The Wolfe Tones, Afro-Celt, Elvis Costello, The Saw Doctor’s, Luka Bloom and that is just a sample of the artists that are played.It is very rare that a song is played that I don’t like. Every year Larry has special programs celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, and James Joyce and Bloomsday and a Christmas Special- {the Bloomsday and Christmas shows are my personal favorites shows}

Give Celtic Crush a try- if you listen to one episode I bet you will be hooked! I remember when I discovered it- in the fall of 2009 on a Saturday morning [the show was on Saturday’s at that time} when I was searching for music and stopped on a station that was playing a Liam Clancy song. I kept it on that channel. Then Larry comes on after the song and tells a story about Liam. I was hooked. The next week it became part of my weekly schedule. I haven’t missed an episode since. There is nothing like it on radio.

Below is an older article on the crush from the Irish-American News- which tells you a lot about the show.
