Former Brazilian basketball star Oscar Schmidt turns 59 today. Schmidt may be the greatest basketball player who never played in the N.B.A. Schmidt who played professional basketball from 1974- 2003. He is unofficially the highest scoring player in basketball history with 49,737 points. He starred on Brazil’s Olympic team five times. He was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1984 but until 1989 NBA players weren’t allowed to play in the Olympics. No doubt if his career had started this century he would have been in the NBA at a young age, basketball is such an international game today.
In 38 career Olympic games he averaged 28.8 a game. The Olympic teams he played on weren’t all that great- never going past the quarter-finals but Schmidt was always outstanding and fun to watch. He was a small forward. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
