On this day in 1971- twelve years after it was released in the theaters, the iconic film “Ben-Hur” was shown on television. “Ben-Hur” won eleven Oscars a record at the time, it was later tied by “Titanic”-which is kind of a joke, lousy movie, and “The Lord of The Rings-The Return of the King.”
What strikes me as incredible in our day in age when a movie is out in the theaters and a short time later available on DVD/Blu-Ray is -TWELVE YEARS from the time it left the theaters before it was shown on television. There was no video release. You couldn’t view it whenever you felt like watching it. If you didn’t see it in 1959 in the theaters you had to wait, and wait and wait.
This brings back a lot of memories. I would buy the TV Guide every week and look through it highlighting movies I wanted to see. I remember a number of times I’d see a movie was going to be on at 11:30 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday night and sometimes I did manage to stay up and see the movie. Sometimes I’d fall asleep. There were no VHR’s to tape it. You stayed up and watched it or waited until it was shown again. I love watching movies and television shows. I am big on media. I can’t imagine going back to those dark ages. Oh and I almost forgot- you had to watch the movies back then with commercials. I can’t remember the last time I watched a movie with commercials. Can’t do it, won’t do it.
